We're Just Too Good

This past Saturday fifteen schools were represented at the St. Bonaventure High School Math Contest for 7th and 8th graders.  Each school could register up to 15 students, so over 100 mathletes showed up to compete.  Well, our school had only two students, Slater and Bobby.  What we lacked in numbers, we made up in ranking: Bobby took second place and Slater took third place in the individual round — each received a calculator and a plaque that is being held now for name engraving.  They went on to place second in the team round and got a trophy for our school.  We did well in 2008 also.

Bobby and Slater are in my Geometry class and MathCounts elective.  One day, Slater had to point out, "Mrs. Nguyen, that was the third mistake you've made today."  Whatever, Slater, I'm still smarter than you... at least every other day.

The mathletes had 45 minutes to complete 25 questions, and calculators were allowed.  There was only one question that both boys missed, question #24.  Ahh, a work problem — I like these!  I teach my algebra kids how to do work problems by just drawing rectangles, then we use the equations.  (The boys did not have me for algebra last year.)  They got all the tougher ones correct though!

Paulo can do 16 math problems in one half hour.  Jaylee can do 12 problems in 15 minutes.  How long would it take them to do 8 problems working together (minutes)?
